John who is 71 years young has participated in the TNHBR 23 years.
How long have you been cycling and what got you into it?
I got my first bike, a J.C. Higgins balloon tire single speed for my ninth birthday and have been on two wheels ever since – both bicycle and motorcycle (retired from the motorcycles).
What did / do you do for work?
My career was spent in IT, computers – first as a programmer, then a systems analyst and finally a manager.
What’s something that people from the ride might not know about you?
When I was 21 a car hit me head on on my motorcycle and I lost my leg. I used my bicycle as physical therapy to get my knee to bend enough that I could get another motorcycle. I moved to NC last year when I got tired of the NH winters.
What are 3 things you would like your profile to say?
- Takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’
- CMT (Charcotte-Marie-Tooth disease, a form of MD) and old age are catching up with me which is why I no longer do the whole ride.
